Three tips to get you writing

In The Writer's Craft on March 27, 2009 at 10:12 pm

1. Set your writing goals – Keep your writing plans simple and realistic. Do you want to write poems, keep a journal, write an essay, draft a short story, or try your hand at feature writing? Create a daily or weekly or monthly reasonable writing target. Writing goals will encourage you to sit down and write by giving you a sense of direction and keep track of your progress.

2. Manage your time – Write at a particular time of the day (or night) and stick to it. Make it a habit, if not a necessity, like combing your hair or drinking water. Get writing into your system so that the next time you wake up or before you head to bed, you’ll be writing a page or two on your notebook. Skip the CSI reruns and just right on your desk.

3. Write and learn - Brush up on your grammar, spelling, style and writing techniques. Analyze your strengths and weaknesses and work towards improving or addressing them. Go back to your old works and see where you can improve. Also, read good writing and analyze your favorite articles or poems to uncover what makes them tick. Take note.

Three simple writing tips really, but often taken for granted. If writing is something you want to do, stop thinking about it. Write it down. Now.
